That Dirty Four-Letter Word...

You thought it was the "F…." word? Watch your mouth!!!

No, we’re talking about the word “want”.

As a wedding planner, we hear this word every day.

"I want..." (Cue the dramatic music.)

·      "I want a floral installation hanging from the ceiling."

·      "I want a champagne tower."

·      "I want a custom dance floor."

·      "I want a band."

·      "I want “X” venue, it’s only $10,000” (When we know there’s another $4,000 in hidden fees headed your way.)

Listen, we get it. Pinterest and Instagram are magical places where every wedding is bathed in golden sunlight, every centerpiece is overflowing with imported florals, and no vendor ever shares the real cost required to bring that picture to life. AND don’t even get us started on how many of these photos are staged shoots, or eFen worse now, completely unattainable AI creations, that will definitely have you dreaming outside your budget.

Social media has convinced couples that every wedding should look like it belongs on the cover of a luxury bridal magazine. Here's the problem:

Your Pinterest board doesn't know your budget. And your Instagram algorithm doesn't care about it either.

"Want" Isn't Your Enemy...Your Knowledge of What Things Cost Is (and this isn’t your fault)

The word want becomes dangerous when it comes with unrealistic expectations. It's easy to fall in love with hundreds of beautiful photos without realizing what you're actually looking at. Especially when no one online is upfront about what things cost.

That dreamy floral arch? The starting price is probably around $2,500…yes, STARTING price.

That candlelit reception? There may be 800 candles. (Someone consulted on the "want", inventoried, packed, transported, unpacked, lit every single one, and did it all in reverse at the end of your event.)

That gorgeous tablescape? Custom linens? Designer China? Luxury rentals? Custom menus? Imported flowers? And what if those florals you “want” aren't in season…dear Lord, help us all….

It's less "simple elegance" and more "there goes the new house fund." So how do you avoid the trap, well, let's get into it.

Inspiration Is Meant to Inspire—Not Be Copied

Here's a little secret from behind the scenes. The best weddings aren't copies, they're interpretations. When you show us a Pinterest photo, we’re not looking at it thinking, "Great, let's recreate this exactly." We’re asking:

  • What do you actually love about this item?

  • Is it the color palette?

  • The romantic lighting?

  • The texture?

  • The flowers?

  • The overall feeling?

Because chances are, it's not the exact chandelier or the imported orchids you're obsessed with. It's the atmosphere. And atmosphere can be created in hundreds of ways.

Let's Turn "I Want..." Into "How Can We..."

This is where the magic happens. Instead of saying, "I want this particular look.” Discuss with your partner and your planner, "How can we create this feeling within our budget?" Which is exactly what we do when we dive into your comprehensive budget call. There’s a reason we do want a Pinterest board from you. It’s our jumping off point, not the landing. THIS is where we start having fun and create something special for you!

Instead of wanting a ceiling treatment…

  • Create impact over the head table, at the band/DJ façade or even a treatment that can be used at the ceremony and repurposed to one of the places we just mentioned.

  • Think about a specific focal point and design around that area. This will create more "wow" than trying to decorate every square inch of the venue.

Instead of wanting thousands of fresh blooms...

  • Mix large more affordable blues with greenery and sprinkle in a few of your favorite premium flowers.

  • Incorporate candles, textured fabrics, lanterns, fruit, dried elements, or beautiful vessels that add visual interest without requiring a florist to empty an entire flower market.

Instead of wanting custom items…

  • Rent it from a vendor with lots of options, so you can pick from a wider variety.

  • DIY what you can without overloading your tasks. Tip: Your planner can help here too!

  • Use all the existing décor from your venue and caterer, and build out or pay for upgrades instead of renting or ordering custom creations.

  • Pick and choose areas to focus. Chances are if you skip that really expensive charger or dinner plate, no one will ever notice.

Seriously, after 16 years of weddings, we’ve never heard any guest say, "Can you believe they didn’t order everything custom?" No, of course not. They're too busy enjoying dinner and celebrating with you.

Instead of wanting the most popular/trendiest venue...

Choose a venue with character. Beautiful architecture, gardens, exposed brick, historic charm, dramatic windows, or stunning views do half the decorating for you. After all, that's built in décor, so take advantage and be creative with where you choose to say “I do”.

Instead of wanting every trend...

Pick two or three, and focus your attention there. Because honestly, most trends age faster than avocado toast. Your wedding should feel like you, not like an algorithm or AI assembled it.

Don’t Let the Word “Budget” Be A Buzzkill

Setting and keeping track of your budget isn’t nearly as exciting as creating your mood board, but here's something we've learned after planning countless weddings. A realistic budget doesn't limit creativity, it focuses it. Some of our favorite weddings weren't necessarily the biggest budgets. They were the couples who knew what mattered most. They understood WHY they were hosting a wedding and the real reason behind what it meant to get married. They spent intentionally. They prioritized experiences over excess. They invested where guests would actually notice, and they skipped the things nobody remembered when it was all said and done.

Your Wedding Should Tell Your Story

The most memorable weddings have personality. They include meaningful details, family traditions, favorite foods, personal song choices, and unexpected moments. Those are the things people talk about years later.

Not whether your napkins matched the exact shade of French blue from someone else's viral wedding reel.

So... Is "Want" Really a Four-Letter Word?

Technically yes, but that’s not the point. It’s not a four-letter word in the sense that we are sarcastically joking about. At the end of the day, you should absolutely dream. Collect inspiration. Save photos. Imagine your perfect day. Just don't let "want" become the thing that steals your joy before you're even started your planning process.

Instead, let "want" become the starting point for a conversation.

  • "I want this feeling."

  • "I want guests to feel welcomed."

  • "I want the day to feel elegant."

  • "I want people to remember how much fun they had."

  • "I want to be in the moment with my new husband/wife/family/friends."

Now those are wants worth planning around!

Your guests will always remember how you made them feel at your event, they absolutely will not remember your flowers, the chargers, those expensive couture linens. They will remember feeling loved, welcomed, taken care of, considered, and like they were truly the p

art of a beautiful new beginning.

The goal isn't to recreate something you saw online. It’s to create a celebration that reflects your style, fits your budget, and feels authentically you. And we promise….that's far more beautiful than anything you'll ever find on Pinterest or Instagram. Your story will always be unique because there isn’t another you anywhere in the universe.
